How Hormones Can Measure The Extent of Your Body Building Efforts

Body building works by pushing your body to its ultimate limits repeatedly in your workout program and then consuming enough calories and proteins to make up for it.

The whole process sounds unhealthy when you put it down like that in so many words, but it is actually not.  It is a simple process of training your body to the point where it accepts that continues and constant muscle increase and muscular gain is how it should function.

The whole methodology of body building – that is exercising every day with high intensity bench presses and weight lifting and so on, and then compensating for it with eating lots and lots of calories – is time tested and proven to be both effective and healthy over a long period of time.

So that being said, while yes you are pushing body to its limits, how do you keep a note of yourself to know that you are not over doing it?

Too much of anything is a bad thing

Your body is an instrument just like any other that you own.  So what happens to instruments when you use them too roughly or work them repeatedly and harshly without giving them any breaks?

They’ll work just fine initially, but after a long time, when they can no longer take it, the instrument will malfunction and break.

The body works similarly when it comes to body building.  Eating six to eight small high calorie meals every day is good.  Doing high intensity muscle work outs for forty minute durations scattered throughout your day is good.

What is not good is working yourself to the point of exhaustion repeatedly while not replenishing the calories you lost.  Also bad is eating too large and hearty meals at only three times a day, which leads to slowing down your digestion and less utilization of the protein and calories you consumed in your diet.

So the most important thing is moderation.

But how to know if what you consider moderation is actually what is correct and moderate for your body?  How to know your body is still functioning efficiently and has not been thrown haywire by your body building regimen?

This is where hormones and body reactions come in to play.

Listen to your body

Each person reacts differently to body building regimens.  For some, heavy duty training and over working their body muscles is the best way to gain a desired increase in their muscle mass and bulk up to their satisfaction.

For others, high intensity and high strain work outs are actually harmful to their body building goals.  They experience extreme muscle fatigue, muscle sprains, unbearable strains and cramps.  If in these cases the people continue to push themselves, it may even lead to permanent damage or in some extreme cases, even death.

So how to understand what you body needs and keep yourself in check?

Sometimes, you will notice that the body has just given up and has stopped putting on muscle mass and gain in muscle weight has completely just halted in your body.  No matter what you do, you are no longer bulking up on muscles, even though you have been following your body building regimen properly and have cut no corners in your diet.

Why does this happen? This is a way of your body telling you it cannot handle anymore.  The body reaches a neutral plateau of muscle growth state called the catabolism state.  In this state, no new growth is observed.

Any calorie you eat is simply used up in your workout, but is not used as a base for growing new muscles.  Even smaller work outs lead to fatigue in your body and there is none of the beneficial energy and endorphins released from your work outs.  When this state is reached, it is best to consult a proper body building expert or trainer and start working on changing your body building program.

By altering or reducing your work out schedule and practices a little, you can bring your body out of this neutral and immovable catabolism state and bring it back to being able to stimulate muscle growth.

The sex drive co–relation to your body building

Another one of the important indicators that show that you are over working your body is your sex drive.

The thing is, body building has a direct connection to testosterone.  Male or female, everyone has a little bit of this male characteristics hormone present inside them. It’s considerably higher in males, obviously.

So, when you work out a lot and are bulking up with a considerable weight of muscle mass, your testosterone production goes up. Testosterone increases strength and aggression in a person, which is why body builders and people with great muscle mass are usually stronger and more aggressive in general.

However, another thing about the testosterone hormone is that it impacts the sex drive of a person, that is, the desire a person has to have sex.  Especially in males, the testosterone hormone is one of the primary factors that increases the sex drive and the desire for sex.

If your body building efforts are going well, that is, it is still beneficial to the body quite apart from how much muscle mass you are gaining, then you will have positive testosterone effects.  You will find yourself having an increased sex drive and an increased appetite overall for the more animalistic desires of life, like running or physical activities and so on.

However, if you are over working your body beyond its limits in your body building regime, then the testosterone levels, while still being produced high, will also become fluctuating and unhealthy.  In this case, the person will see their sex drive and interest in sex flagging and in some extreme cases, the sex drive may even become non existent.

This is one of the biggest indicators by which you can determine which side of the body building program you are on – healthy or unhealthy.  If your body feels over worked, these are the signals it sends you to let you know and your hormones work a particular way.

Keeping an eye on these hormonal changes can tell you just how good your body building efforts really are for you!
