Metabolism – that innate characteristic that is the bane for someone fat and boon for the thin people of the world. How often have you been out with a group of friends seen that one person who inhales high calorie junk like air, but still doesn’t put on so much as half a pound?

Whereas then there’s you, who minds and watches and measures every bit of food you eat for the calorie intake and yet you don’t reduce weight. In fact, you seem to gain it after just one meal of indulgence!

And you sigh and shake your head muttering ‘Metabolism’ because yes that is one of the main reasons.

Having a faster metabolism makes you likely to not put on fat, no matter how much fat and cholesterol you eat. However, having a slower metabolism is a problem for those trying to shed those pesky pounds.

Faster metabolism means that your body is always in an active fat burning phase. In people with fat metabolism, even simple every day actions like blinking and breathing and walking around, burns more calories than their slower metabolism counterparts. So they can eat more calories than you and still keep that awesome figure. It seems unfair, but that’s how it is.

So does that mean people with slower metabolism should just give up and resign themselves to either half starvation or being fat for the rest of their lives. The answer is no, absolutely not! Because being born with a slow metabolism does not mean you have to end up staying with a slow metabolism. There are many ways to boost up your body’s metabolic rate and make your metabolism more active even at its resting state!

You can’t avoid it – Exercise

It is hard to get up the motivation to regularly do a work out and even harder when you are stuck at a desk job all day every day, but exercise really is the most efficient way to boost up your metabolism and burn all that fat.

Exercising in itself burns off a lot of calories and fats in your body. But the impact it has on your metabolism is really great too. Exercising of any type really boosts up your body’s active state. It makes your body stay ON for longer time and this increases the metabolic rate of the body. And an increased metabolic rate means an increased calorie burning and fat burning outcome.

When you exercise regularly, it is not only during your work out that you lose calories and burn fat. If you are casually asked to think about it, you may think that sleeping less would make your body more likely to burn calories. You may feel – hey, the body is already tired so it will need more calories to keep functioning right?

But actually that is completely wrong. It is the inverse that is true!

A good sleep of six to eight solid hours a day is the ultimate helper in boosting your metabolism. When you get less sleep, the body’s metabolism slows itself down and goes into a more neutral and hibernate mode, in order to be ready for “back up” in case it needs it.

So if you are a regular night owl and don’t get sleep for more than four hours a day every day, that is totally going to ruin your waistline!

This should be pretty easy to fulfill though right – Sleep more to burn more fat!

Mind what you eat – and when you eat

Your metabolism is only as good as what you feed it. If you keep eating high calorie greasy junk and expect your body to co operate, well, it’s going to start rebelling right back.

The thing about food is always moderation. Eat a lot – but spread out throughout the day. Instead of gorging yourself with food at three meals a day, try having tiny, “small” meals every two or three hours. And make sure the small meals are healthy. Much on an apple, eat a banana, pack some carrot sticks, get a toast with low sugar jam instead of marmalade – just a few changes here and there can make a world of difference!

Also try including metabolism boosting and calorie burning foods in your diet. There are many food items – like green tea and hot peppers – which make tiny but in the long run significant boosts to your body metabolism.

Try to include a lot of protein in your diet. Eggs, milk, fish – these are all excellent sources of high levels of protein, and that is the best for burning more fat and inducing a higher metabolism. Protein takes much longer to digest than any other food group, so your body will spend longer at an active digestive metabolic rate than it normally does, just to digest a small serving of protein.

And this is also great because protein is a great source for muscle building and when you combine a high protein diet with a good work out schedule, you not only increase your metabolism a great deal, but also burn a lot of fat!
